Interfacial contact is a crucial design parameter in membrane-electrode-assembly based electrochemical energy conversion devices. However, what is a good interfacial contact? How do we quantify it? Surface roughness has been used as a quantitative method to characterize interfacial contact, but in this work, we delved deeper. We used finite-element-analysis to quantify interfacial properties, computing properties such as stress distribution, membrane protrusion, membrane deformation, and contact ratio.
